Clinical GeneticsTayside University Hospitals NHS Trust Phone (44) 01382 632035 Many of us are affected by or have relatives with conditions that run in families. Diagnosis of a hereditary condition within a family often has implications for those affected and for their relatives. Other members of the family may be at risk or at risk of having affected children. The occurrence of hereditary conditions and their complications can often be predicted and measures taken to minimise their effects. Genetic tests are becoming available that can assist in the diagnosis and identification of those at risk from an increasing range of conditions. Quite often the risks of an inherited disorder prove to be low and assessment at a genetics clinic provides reassurance. Specialist clinics for the diagnosis of hereditary conditions, to advise affected families and to help coordinate their management are provided by two Consultant Clinical Geneticists and three Genetic Councellors based at Ninewells Hospital. Clinics are held in several locations across Tayside (Ninewells Hospital, Perth Royal Infirmary, Arbroath Infirmary and Whitehills Forfar). Clinics include general genetics clinics and specialist, familial cancer clinics, antenatal genetics clinics, neurogenetics clinics (adult and paediatric), dermatogenetic clinics and vascular genetics clinics. We can also advise clinical colleagues about diagnosis and management of hereditary conditions and interpretation of the results of genetic investigations Staff
